Spirit of '71 stage
Did anyone go there?
I'm not sure if it was the lineup of the location, but from what I saw it wasn't exactly a roaring success.

The few times we walked past, there was only ever a handful of people watching.

Saw some good stuff there (A Brown, L Lewis, S Hillage - no wait, I missed him 'cos of a clash) - it really did feel like a separate, smaller festival (admittedly one that someone had forgotten to advertise).
Except, of course, when there was anything on at the G Stage, when you could barely hear a thing....
Another nice idea badly implemented, I'm afraid.

I was a bit disappointed, it was squeezed into a space too close to Glade. I thought it was meant to have been built to look like the '71 stage too, I was really looking forward to seeing that

Indeed. Putting it where the Queens Head used to be, under the Glorious Worker's Tower might have worked. Or even in place of the Blazing Saddle.

I was disappointed. Saw a couple of things there but nothing outstanding, although someone said Arthur Brown was a good set. I think it was a mistake calling it 'Spirit' of '71 and trying to put on bands who were actually there in '71. I'm sure there are plenty of bands still touring in one form or another who were around in '71 and who could have created the 'spirit' if not recreated the event itself. Hopefully it will be back in 2013 as it gives another dimension, but is widened out to include more acts dating back to that era.

I was very disappointed to hear about the stage being set up in the first place. It seemed to me to be pigeon-holing music from an older generation which seems to go against the whole Glasto thang. Many people would have seen the stage name and purpose behind it and said, "nope, not for me". But one of the great pleasures of Glastonbury has always been discovering stuff you haven't heard before, new and old. I won't forget the teenager I overheard/ heard about/read somewhere (?) who said "Why haven't I heard of Neil Young before? The guy is awesome!" Put those acts on various other stages and they'd get an audience.
Just my opinion, but that's the way it seemed to me. As for putting it opposite the G-Stage, WTF? Oh and who renamed The Glade the G-Stage FFS?
(God, I must stop grumbling so much )

While we waited for Paul Simon to come on a group of teenagers walked past and one of the group was saying to his mates "Paul Simon is a once in a lifetime act, we gotta watch him!" His mates didn't seem to happy but the young lad insisted.
Made WhatMe and myself smile.

Bingo! I can see, I think, why they may have wanted to do it that way - especially as the 1971 Glastonbury Fayre was itself sort of off to one side of the line from the first Glastonbury to the present day.
What I think would have worked better, though, would have been to have had a separate strand running through the programme, of events at all the other stages, labelled (I'm carefully not saying "flagged up" - flags weren't a problem in 1971) "Spirit of '71".
Then people could have either followed that thread through the festival, or been taken by surprise when they accidentally exposed themselves to the old stuff....
I can't help but compare the audience for Linda Lewis's set (a couple of hundred - Halvin predicted three times that) with the surprisingly full Jazz World field on the Sunday morning in 2009....

I'm not sure how believable it is, but there was a suggestion that it was something to do with the spin-off Glade Festival being once again run by the folk who organised the original Glade and they wanted "their" name back, thanks very much.
Alternatively, maybe Glastonbury wanted to dissociate the stage from the Glade Festival?

Never got there myself but perhaps the stage could have gone to Williams, by the Workers tower as mentioned... That whole section seemed like wasted space to me... Or bring Leftfield back to it's spiritual home

the Leftfields spiritual home is opposite where the cider bus is, that is where it was first, next to the cinema tent.

Not sure about why the Glade became the G Stage but we used to have an open air venue called the G Stage in the Dance Village a few years ago. Good (and absolutely true) story about it - one of the stewards found a couple attempting to have sex under a blanket by the side of the venue so she went up to them and said to the lad, "If you're trying to find the G Spot, you're nowhere near - this is the G Stage!" Unsurprisingly, they decided to go elsewhere.

we all have to get used to changes I suppose, and yeah, some of them are not always for the best.
I stumbled accross Melanie on the 'Spirit of 71' Friday night I think. It was her voice that drew me in, and she still has a wonderful voice. You would never have recognised her as the petite blonde haired waif of the '70s, but I am glad I saw her, very entertaining

I was there in the rain { heavy at times } - she started later than was planned. { Crazy World of Arthur Brown was on before her }
With it clashing with U2 it was more busy than I was expecting.
I first saw her in the 70's so I have seen her loads of times and I know her songs very well.
She played a mixture from various albums.
The sound was not great due to sound coming in from various directions.
It was good to see her again.
