Default Selling Vodka Jelly... a good idea?
Hi guys,

So, the plan this time last year was that next year there was *no way* I could afford Glasto, and it would be an awesome experience and good for the CV to steward or campaign with Oxfam.

Unfortunately, I didn't make it through the selection process to Campaign with them, and missed the deadline cuz of money issues for the next steward opening.

However... on Saturday I heard about the limited re-sale of returned tickets, and there just happened to be the right amount left in my bank account, and...well the last one I missed was when I was 15, and I couldn't miss the 40th could I?! So I rounded up some mates from a separate forum (breakaway from Efests from years ago) and one of them managed to get me a ticket!

Obviously I'm over the moon that I'm going... but I don't know how the hell I'm going to afford it! I make jewellery on the side of my admin job so i'll be getting on with that, but I'm also considering selling Vodka jelly shots at the festival.

I've looked into costs...
100 vodka jelly shot glasses with lids £10 off ebay, hold 25ml each, say I use 15ml of vodka for each, thats 1.5l of vodka, reckon I could manage that for £15 and the jelly for about £7, thats £32. If I sell them at 2 for £3 I'd make £150, less costs thats £118.

What I want to know is

a. Would I get in serious shit with stewards for selling this?
b. Will people actually buy it? I'm going to a fancy dress party on the Weds night so I figure I could spend my Thurs night dressed as a vodka fairy in the stone circle, might attract some punters...
c. Does anyone have any recipes for vodka jelly?

Cheers

Sarah

there are many people selling vodka jelly at stone circle and i have never seen anyone stopped but that doesnt mean they dont.
how would you keep the jelly firm in the hot weather though? and transporting it onto site, from my experience with kids lunch boxes if the jelly get shaken about it turns to mush.
as for the recipe, we have made bacardi and vodka jellies and the best way is to use half the liquid it suggests so if it calls for a pint of water then i use 1/4 pint spirit and 1/4 pint water (any more spirit and it wont set at all)
i think its a great way of making money.
something that you may consider as a money maker is to freeze several boxes of wine and then sell glasses of cold wine on day 2 or even 3 of the festival. i know i would pay a pound or so for a cold glass of wine.
we froze some wine last year and it was still chilled on the sunday. just an idea.
and excellent news on your ticket. see next month x

Sorry to point out but the stewards is the least of your problems as selling alcohol inside Glastonbury is illegal and in in fact is a breach of the Premises Licence issued to Melvin Benn { GFL } that runs out this year { under the provisions of the Licensing Act 2003 }

Mendip District Council will negotiate a new Licence for 2011 and if they spot too many illegal sales they may consider a total ban of alcohol being brought onto the Glastonbury site { even for pleasure }

in fact they have had this power for years and its amazing they have not put their foot down ' yet '.

selling is a breach of your ticket and they can if they wish remove your wrist band and eject you { which has happened before } so even if you don't get arrested you may end on the wrong side of the fence.

Its unlikely but it can happen.

So as you can see if they pull the plug this will affect everyone who brings alcohol just for their own use and if it changes its unlikely the Councill will ever allow the situation to revert back to the way it was.

and I quote from last years report from Mendip District Council

Primarily the Council’s direct involvement in the Festival relates to the issuing, monitoring and, if required, enforcement of the Premises Licence. RA’s and IP’s have legal rights with regard to the Premises Licence and these bodies can call for a review of the Licence at any time, if they were sufficiently concerned about the event. Officers of the Licensing Authority would determine whether any review application was ‘duly made’ as section 51 4) - 5) of the 2003 Act. If such an application was duly made it would be determined by the Licensing Board.

In such circumstances the Licensing Board may take the following steps, if any, if it believes it necessary for the promotion of the licensing objectives:
Modify the conditions;
Exclude a licensable activity;
Remove the Designated Premises Supervisor
Suspend the licence for a period not exceeding three months; or
Revoke the Licence.
All legal parties to a relevant application may appeal against the Licensing Board’s decision to the Magistrates’ Court.

During the Festival there were some minor breaches of licence conditions, that are addressed in the specialist officer reports. It is considered inevitable during an event of the scale of Glastonbury Festival there will be some technical/minor breaches of conditions. However, it is considered the response by the Licensee, to these breaches that is the key issue.

It is expected that the Licensee and Glastonbury Festival Management team effectively manage these issues to stop the breach from reccurring or endeavour to mitigate their impact that is paramount. Therefore careful consideration will be taken as to the most appropriate cause of action to deal with any breaches.

Licensing

The Premises Licence Holder is advised to continue to ensure that the small operators particularly selling alcohol under his premises licence, seek or are provided with relevant advice regarding “over serving”, selling to those that are underage and the legislation pertaining to marked measures. Furthermore, he should make further efforts to ensure that such guidance is followed appropriately and record such efforts in writing fully. The Premises Licence Holder should continue to ensure that he is fully aware of all traders (including non – bar outlets) that are proposing to sell alcohol on the licensed site, and that this is fully reflected in relevant documentation and location maps.

The full list of outlets permitted to sell alcohol, personal licence holders deployed and ‘area managers’ for the purposes of the licence should be available and complete at least 14 days prior to the event commencing.

The licensing team will continue to review and assess their work on this area of responsibility, and strive to use its resources better and continue to work in partnership with the organisers and other statutory agencies.

Right, I've been to Glasto many times. Some times with loads of money some times with about £25 in me wallet.

If you're going with friends they always help out, and as one of my favourite sayings is...

"There are no such things as strangers, just friends you havn't met yet"

I bet by the time you leave Glasto you will have another 20 or 30 friends, I will be one of them. If you need any thing I will be only too pleased to help.
