Default Lock ups
Sorry, I think I may have asked this question last year but thought I'd ask it again anyway.

So I'm in the campervan fields again this year One of the few disadvantages to this is the hike to and from the site. I don't know how far away we'll be but given that we're going on Wednesday, it'll be bloody miles away I'm sure. And even though we got there on Tuesday last year, we weren't much closer so it's a given that it's a big hike, including the hill of death. I'm pretty fit (go running a lot etc) so it's not the actual walking that bothers me so much as the time lost. Obviously the journey can be fun too but it's like any Glatonbury mission, it's taking you away from all the fun things you WANT to be doing rather than NEED to.

Anyway... the last two years I've ended up carrying a really heavy rucksack round all day, the weight being primarily made up of booze and warm clothes for when it cools down later in the day. Obviously as the day goes on and I drink my booze and put my clothes on, the bag gets lighter. But I still end up knackered and with very sore shoulders. This year I'm going to splash out and get some massages in the Healing Fields but the problem remains.

The friends I was with last year schlepped back to the van every day to get changed, re-fuel with booze and often so my friend, who was pregnant, could have a wee nap. Now I have considered doing that this year but just don't want to lose 2 hours out of every day for that.

So, I finally get to my question... What are the lock ups like? How big a ball ache are they to use? Do they usually have big queues? How big are the lockers? Can you store booze in them? How widely dispersed are they? I know many answers are probably available on the site but I was wanting some advice from people who've actually used them. Thanks

Theres quite a few around site so they aint that hard to find. From what I remember you gave whatever you wanted them to keep safe to them and they gave you a receipt which you gave back to them when you wanted your stuff back. I don't really think there actual lockers but I aint to sure, more like big racks with loads of stuff on em. They aint gonna stop you putting booze in there especially if you have it in a bag with other stuff like clothes in to bulk it out and it would protect it if they are a bit heavy handed with it. I think they aint as well used as they should be so queues aint really that much of a issue.

There very easy and useful to use to use just make sure you don't loose your receipt cos you'd be in a bit of a pickle if you did

There's about 10 of them dotted around the site. Look for the keyhole symbols on the site map. You can put anything you want in there and go back as many times as you like during the day although a small donation each time is appreciated as they are run by charities. No lockers, just a large steel cage with shelving inside a marquee (see the picture in the FAQ's) and I've never noticed anything that could genuinely be described as a queue at any of them although I suppose it depends on the time of day.

They're brilliant, and the only time I've seen a queue at one is on Sunday night. We used them to stow our fancy dress kit and for nights in Shangri-La, really handy.
Make sure whatever you're putting in is in a closed bag, and TOP TIP: when you get your ticket, take a snap of it with your phonecam (if you have one) because bits of paper are easy to loose.

<cough cough>

There are probably nearer 18 lock-ups of various sizes scattered around the festival, they are open 24hrs a day from Wednesday morning thru to Monday morning (most will be closing, late morning & closed totally by noon).

Size of them varies tremendously, depending on location and demand mainly. They can be found by looking for the keyhole symbol on the map, though often this is approximate location. There are two types of 'lock-up', most common being a white marquee, with steel mesh fancing inside with scaffolding shelves. The marquee style ones size does vary a little from big to huge! The other type is a steel container, kinda like the ones used for shipping, these are fewer in number and are often located where it's not possible to have fitted a marquee - right beside gate C being one example, and the a good place to store your crampons for the walk up & down the hill of death to the campervan fields
Locations of them are pretty well spread across the site, many are located in the camping fields, tho not all fields. But they can often stand out quite well in there as are often the biggest structure. Notable ones for using as booze/clothing drops are the one opposite the pyramid stage, often has a big CND symbol on it, and a welsh flag. There's also a large one near the meeting point/entrence to kids field. There's a large one just outside west-holts, other side of the hedge on the way to other stage from there. There's one tucked in by the Glade, though this one does move about a bit as this area does keep changing. There's also one in M market area on the route from the main drag to crossiant neuf etc.

As for queues, the only time there is noticable queues tends to be as the main acts finish and people come to collect there stuff for the night hours/walk home/etc. So from 11pm-1am they can be a little busyish (main area ones & campsite ones). Also, if there are sudden rain showers or changes in weather there can be a little bit of a rush as people queue to change into more suitable clothing!
Sunday evening can often see them quite busy as many people will pack their gear up during the day, leave it all at a lock-up then collect after the last bands to make a quick getaway. Campsite ones and ones near the exits are very prone to this type of use, so expect queues then.
Also, special notice should be given to those using the one near gate A. This lock-up does get swamped with stuff on the sunday evening and particularly the Monday morning as it's nearest the bus station, so if you plan on using it make sure you allow extra time for queuing, in the past the queue has been over an hour in length, tho the volunteer organisers have learned to provide extra staffing there on a Monday morning now, but there is still a limit on how many people they can attend to at once.

Although crime levels have dropped hugely since the ring of steel went up, there is still a significant amount of theivery from tents, so do not leave anything in your tent of value, but you shouldn't feel so paranoid about this that you need to put your sleepbag and roll mat in a lock-up. The main purpose of the lock-ups is to prevent crime, though they are more than happy to store your trolleys, Beer, changes of clothing, etc whilst you bimble around enjoying yourselves.

Lock-ups are all staffed by volunteers, for a number of various organisations, each lock-up will have some signage indicating which group is providing volunteers, some lock-ups have a number of different groups running them. The organisations do get paid by the festival for providing staff for these, but donations for using the service are encouraged, though not expected upon every visit. The organisations can not accept alcohol donations, and the volunteers should not be drinking whilst on shift, though may be more than happy to accept a donation of a tinnie or two for when they finish.

Whilst there is no facilities to refridgerate beverages in the lock-ups, they do tend to remain quite cool, and slabs of beer are often stored on the bottom shelf/ground so can be refreshingly cold when it is really hot.

Also, if storing beer in them, don't take the P*** by storing a slab of beer there and only taking out a can at a time, there is paperwork involved each time!

If you're lucky, or possibly unlucky depending how you see it, you may even get to see me on shift in one of these, but I don't yet know which or what time I'll be working

Good tip, but.... Do not expect this alone to be good enough to retrieve your belongings! Think about it, if you lost yr fone, you wouldn't want to make it that easy to lose all you had in the lock up too! Much better to just make a note of the ticket number

Thanks loads for all the tips guys. I'll definitely be using these this year then, don't know why I haven't in the past really! Woo, imagine walking around Glastonbury without half your body weight on your back in clothes and booze! I'm still having massages in the Healing Fields though!

It might also be a good idea to take a picture of which lock up you've used and where it is, depending on how hammered you get...!

That's a pretty smart idea, each time I've worked there has always been a few people turned up to collect stuff from the wrong lock-up, luckily tickets do have indications of which lock-up they've been issued from and unique ticket numbers that can be traced back to the correct lock-up.

Though some of these would have been quite pushed to have worked a camera phone at this point and the more sensible ones would normally have checked it in with their stuff. As well as the chances of people being so 'festied' out that they are unlikely to have been able to recharge their phone!

Oh well, best laid plans and all that!

Best tip I can give is already within the above. As it's quite a slog into and out of the festival, to minimise trips back & forth, bring a bag, or two, of supplies/clothing/booze to stick in a lock-up & try not to forget anything Also, if you got a bike rack, bring a bike, as it can make the trip back & forth to the campervan a lot quicker/easier. Also, being on a bike will give you a bit of a queue jump in and out the gate as you'll be classed as a wide load

Tizzy - a few things spring to mind. 1. The earlier you get there (Tuesday if you can) the closer you will be to the entrance gate. 2. Be prepared for quite a wait to get on site Wed morning as the queues are bigger this day and there is all the issuing of wristbands to be done. 3. After that each time you come off or back on site there is a ticket and wristband check. 4. There are random searches every time u come on site. If u have anything u shouldn't, hide it discreetly - the normal search consists of emptying your bag completely and your pockets and finally a pat down. 5. If you want to take all your gear for the whole day then use the lockups on site to save carrying extra clothes/waterproofs around with you.

Hope this helps - any more questions, ask away
