Internet access at Glastonbury 2011
Hello all, Im trying to find out whether or not there will be internet access in the orange chill n charge tents or elsewhere on the site.
Does anybody know anything? Even if there was a reliable wifi area that would be good to know as I have to send some emails to work on the Friday and Monday mornings (sacrilege I know!).

the site is covered by wifi, but it can get very clogged. Not sure if you need a log in or not, check at an info point on wednesday.

Is it??? Is this new? Never discovered any wifi anywhere on site last year, and the o2 signal often indicated there was data access available but was impossible to send or receive anything with it apart from between 4 & 6am in the morning.
Might be better on Orange, but can't see them being able to cover the whole site, or even cope with data demands for any but their customers.
Would love some more info on this if anyone knows more!

I managed to send an email pretty easily last year. There was a few of us who all worked for the same company there last year, so we sent our colleagues a picture just to show them what a miserable time we were all having!! My iPhone is pretty ancient and wi-fi doesn't work on it, and the email went just fine. And I got several responses back pretty damned fast too!!

My mate had his camper in Dragon Field last year and we got a 'fair' connection from his laptop, googled stuff, and watched some iplayer stuff.
So i know it works, but i think you need a pwd and login from the site office.

I have seen it in action in the Guest area and my Crew Camping Area but I doubt its a open system although the last thing I would do is take a laptop to Glastonbury { even although I have access to power in my crew area }
I do know that a few years ago there was a experiment ran by a University to supply free wifi but as far as I am aware it was only for one year.

I took my iPhone 3GS last year didn't find a WiFi signal but there was 3G coverage, managed to get on Facebook and Twitter no trouble didn't try sending e.mails but can't see there'd be a problem

I didn't have an iPhone last year, but I am taking mine this year. I can't imagine not being able to pick up 3G etc. It may be slow, and a bit hard to pick up in spots, but there must be some floating around lol.

I noticed they'd got masts on the hill above the site last year, just along from the Glastonbury40 sign so 3G's not a problem

Think a 3G signal may be very dependent on what network you're with. I found o2 to be complete pants. I imagine Orange will be a lot better as they have a temp mast for the festival and I beleive Vodaphone also put a temp mast up nearby.
As for wi-fi tho, am still not convinced there could possibly be sitewide coverage, and any onsite wi-fi spots will be password protected I'd imagine!

If you get a cheap, temp, glasto phone, I'd suggest sticking an Orange sim in it. I had no problems at all with signal (didn't have any kind of 3G etc on my old phone) last year.
Orange definitely have put up extra masts to help with demand.
