Hi Gena, I thought i was travelling a long way from Belfast, but you definitely have a long journey to Glasto. It will totally be worth it though, this is only my second time going, my last time being in 2009. It's an out of this world festival, every person I met and chatted to the last time was brilliant craic(fun), and just really made the festival that bit more special.
So asides from looking forward to the Glastonbury experience, what acts are you hoping to see?

Haha yeah I like to travel, especially for concerts.

Glastonbury will probably be the best thing yet aside from my first concert.

Belfast is quite a ways too. I always thought of this as a primarily english event but from what I'm hearing theres people from all over the place yes?

I'm hoping really hoping coldplay will headline. If they do I dont care who else is headlining.

If I could choose the lineup it'd be Coldplay Daft Punk and The Rolling Stones.

What about you guys?

Hi Gena - where in California are you from ? { for those who may not be aware - California is a big state 163,696 sq miles - compare that against Great Britain which is 93,000 sq miles and you get some idea how large it is. }

I used to teach at UCLA { and MIT on the east coast } so I know LA well although my favourite on the west coast has to be San Francisco.

If you wish to read lots more about Glasto then your best to read http://www.glastoearth.com/the-faq as it covers most topics.

You will soon pick up that the headliners don't make or break a event as large as Glasto - its so big that there must be some areas that I have not seen before { and I have been going since 1979 } and now that I work at the event I have even less time to see things.

I hope you find the information useful.

I stayed with friends who live close to Laguna Beach which as you know is not all that far from Huntington Beach - they had two houses - one House very close to the old Minuteman-II silo but I cant recall the area { this was in the 80's and I do know they were moved to another base much later on } - it was somewhere along that coast - you could not miss them as they used to do test fires - it had to have been part of the Strategic Air Command - does this ring a bell ?

The Family home was in a very expensive area with its own private jetty - even in the 80's it was worth $ 3 million - her father was a society divorce lawyer - earned a fortune.

It may have been near Long Beach.

----------

that link will keep you busy for a few hours - if you have broadband { its over 5 Mb's } have a look at a very large panoramic shot on my server at http://www.wbc-team.co.uk/glasto-200...-2009-111.html

even that image does not cover it all.

My friends moved to Bel Air { LA } so did not get down that far on further trips { I was shuttling between UCLA and MIT with a month break between each trip just so I could see the place } - I am sure that your parents or teachers will know what I am on about as they could hardly miss it.

So has Tort's write up got you planning ?

Are you flying over just for Glastonbury or are you going to roll it into a larger trip ?

Are you bringing all the camping gear over with you ?

Even if it is as hot as last year - it can still get cold at night { something to do with the microclimate } which makes it tricky to decide what to pack.

Its def going to be tricky for me to decide what to pack. I asked my friend Kat what english weather is like in June and she said its unpredictable so bring a little bit of everything.

Basically my friend and I are going to rent a car and drive around england seeing as much as we can starting a week and a half before the festival and about a week after as well.

Im trying to see how many days I can manage to stay in England.

As for the camping gear... Im not sure whether we should lug a tent and sleeping bags with us through the airport or just buy them when we get to london.

I kind of want to do the latter. Except I dont know where I'd go to get one in London..... any recommendations?

...how hot did it get last year?

I have sent you a private message with regards Camping gear and details about car rental because its near impossible to rent { and get insurance } a rental car if you or friend are under 21. { they tend to charge extra for people under 25 }

You may find it cheaper buying two cheap PAYG mobile phones

http://www.asdamobile.com/pay-as-you...html?i=6600090

Asda rates are very simple - Calls...... 8p per min flat rate - Texts...... 4p per text to any UK mobile

It got very hot last year but that was exceptional and highly unlikely it will be like that this year.

Put it this way I have been to more wet Glastonburys than dry ones.

When its wet its not raining all the time but storms can crop up very quickly.

You may be lucky - you never know - your best to plan for the worst and you cant go far wrong.

There are plenty of Millets stores in London, you won't have a problem finding one of them.

Millets also run a service where you can order online and collect from their Glasto store, saving you the trouble of transporting your gear to the festival. This service usually starts a month or so before the festival.

It has already been done - one year some of our Bars got flooded and from God knows where the Tent Manager managed to track down a Inflatable Boat and we sailed into the bar to do a inspection - with several feet of water it was clear we would not be using that bar that weekend.

it was even more bizarre around the back as there was two portable toilets gently floating about.

Actually I think they may have managed to get it open by the Sunday but by then I had been moved to a different bar so did not see what it looked like - All I do know is that we never pitched in that location again.

image was not from that year but you will soon get the picture

http://wbc-team.co.uk/afterglasto.html

just click on it to see other images of what it looks like afterwards { although there is much better drainage now } its unlikely you will see anything like that.

Its very rare that ticket holders require the use of a submarine.

For some reason the WBC staff camping had to be split into two camps that year and some Teams were allocated the ' Overspill ' staff camping area - a unfortunate choice of a name because they ended up getting flooded.

We closed down one of our large marquee tents so staff used that as emergency shelter - God knows how the normal ticket holders got on.

A lesson I learned in the Scouts a very long time ago is never camp at the foot of a hill.

There is a area that appears to be a ideal camping spot and people are amazed that so few tents are using it { cant say if its still there as had been years since I was last in that area }

All is well unless there is heavy rain { or very dry } when they discover the reason why there was so few tents in that area - the hill is in fact cattle or pig slurry { never got that close to work out which } - cant recall which year but one year the tents all slid down the hill.

It was roped off for some years but people would still chance their arm.

Its at the back of the farm { where the webcam is mounted }

Its been built up over years and its right on the edge of the back of the farm - when its dry and hot it attracts millions of flies and you can smell it if you go close but if its drizzling it kills the smell .

The killer was there had to be five tents all connected to each other as they had fenced off their camping area and even had a outside table and chairs - it was a competition to see which would reach the bottom first.

There had to be forty tents that got washed down and all the stuff that was in the tent spread out on the hill - it was more like a avalanche

If it was a normal hill it would be ideal as at that time the Pyramid stage used to be facing up towards the farm { it has been turned around in recent years - something to do with health and safety }

Anyone who did not know Glastonbury well must have thought their luck was in although they should have wondered why it was so empty.

The cow shed is mentioned here http://www.bpva.org.uk/?q=node/148
so they may have built on it - will check later this year.

He has 320 cows and he has installed a brush so the cows can give themselves a quick brush. { very cute }

I think the cows are moved to the Dairy unit while the festival is on but its in a blocked off area that you need a staff pass to walk past as there is lots of crew camping sites in that area.

I use that entry/exit several times per day but have yet to spot a cow as they are held within large barns.

the image shows the hill - have painted a red spot on it.

to see the full image look at http://www.wbc-team.co.uk/Glasto-2007-1-large.jpg by the looks of it the hill has been fenced off.

It may look flat but take it from me that is a hill.

what a shame.

someone should let them stampede through the festival for ultimate mayhem haha.

....during beyonces act preferably :P

we can time it to occur at the same time as the avalanche of shat as well.

Compare that against this http://www.wbc-team.co.uk/Glasto-2008-Aerial99.jpg

you can see the strip of green grass { well its grass on top } is far more narrow - so its all a matter of luck how much is fenced off.

It used to be when it was very wet the Hari krishna tent would get packed out and the killer was they had a band playing and just in case someone did not know the words a person would be holding up the words - that was the only thing they played.

Very strange people - the males had a modern toilet but they would not allow any females in it - the place would be heaving until the rain stopped and then it would quickly empty out { never stopped the band as they kept on playing }

Not sure if its still there { which was on the way up to the standing stones } but well worth having a look at.

There is lots of interesting places to see if you have the energy - the hill gets steeper the closer you get to the standing stones - not a problem if its dry but that track does get cut up fast when its wet.

A few videos { not limed by me }

the first one is in the area that is called ' The meeting point ' - this was before mobile phones were common so people would arrange to meet friends at a specific meeting point { normally they are packed }

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpEKCgtZenE

this looks like the Guest area { VIP camping } going by the path
and the fact that the tents are not packed together - I was working in the guest Bar that year and I know the guest camping was a right mess.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Za6Xihlsrfc

when the camera points up the field you see is where the WBC staff was camping - we were lucky as it was on a hill so the water ended up at the bottom { where the toilets were }

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXmYyemQVMc

some general shots - by good fortune I missed most of it as I had a crew pass that allowed me to skip the bad areas otherwise I would have spent hours getting from A to B.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mzle9p0vLds

this is the camping beside the old Railway track that attracted most of the rain

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHAA3rV9CGg

compare all the above to 2010 - speed though the interviews and you see some general shots - you would not believe it was the same place.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94AIuv9r_WA

Glastonbury festival limited has spent a fortune installing underground drainage so the scenes from 2005 should not be seen again.
