Gorillaz replace U2!
We're very pleased to announce that the Friday night Pyramid Stage headline slot which U2 have been forced to vacate will now be taken by Gorillaz, who called offering their services once the news about U2 had broken.
this in on the main glasto site.

And we are supposed to be happy with that... so what is the link with the last 40yrs of Glasto then?
I'm sorry but this is an absolute joke.

Is it April 1st?! Albarn headlining Pyramid two nights in a row - closing 2009 and opening 2010.
I know there are a lot of other bands to see if this doesn't float your boat, but please - this is Friday headline of 40th anniversary Glastonbury! WTF?!
I love Glasto and will always sing it's praises - but this is a serious letdown.

It should be a good show though, and better than watching someone sing while in pain My hubby's ticket arrived today. So we are pleased

While I'm gutted for 2 reasons,
1) I love U2, and hate to see anyone pull out of a festival through injury, especially as no one can deny this would've been special. U2 at Glasto would be brilliant, no matter what you think about them.
2) 40th Glasto and we get Gorrilaz? Really? Not exactly the stella line up we were promised, but hey.
I'm sure it'll still be awesome. It's my first glasto and quite frankly, when I bought my ticket I couldn't care less who was playing really. I'm going 'cause I want to go to Glasto and I'm going. And with regards to Gorrilaz themselves, I'm not hugely into the new album, its good, but not great. But I'm sure they'll be a spectacle. Definitely be watching them.

Glasto is not meant to be 'lazy' when it comes to headliners, and this smacks of it unfortunately.
Hmm, who can we get in?!... I mean, surely there would be a lot of big bands who could and would have taken such a prestigous slot.
As it is make one easy call to Damon Albarn (or the other way round, who knows?...). If anyone heard him last night on Zane Lowe, it was clear he just couldn't believe his luck!
I've nothing against Gorilllaz, although not exactly a fan, but surely when you have done something amazing and got U2, and blow the trumpet about how all the stops have been pulled out to secure them, how incredible it is going to be and fitting for the 40th anniversary etc etc...to then replace with Gorillaz is poor.
What happened to earning the slot? Nah sod that, we got along with Damon last year, he's got another album to promote - give it to him! If anything Gorillaz have gone backwards since their debut album and are not as popular as they once were.
Obviously there are other stages and other headliners - and I'd go to Glasto every year regardless of the actual headliners - but they still form a hugely important role and at Glastonbury it is perhaps more significant than any festival. At this moment it sticks in the throat a little for me.
Amazing if Gorillaz are a massive favourite of yours, but I imagine they weren't even a consideration whatsoever for the overwhelming majority. If the Eavis' were trying to suprise and be innovative well this time they've scored an own goal - and i'll say that regardless of how well it goes down at the event. That's immaterial.

U2... one of, if not the biggest band in the world today to Gorillaz... what a massive let down. Well done to Gorillaz for stepping up but a very average group as a headline act for the 40th.
Wasnt that impressed with the line up prior but now...

I think you have to see what happened to Bono as an unfortunate incident (I know some of you will disagree !), that happened just too close to the Festival. Most bands on tour will have their schedules mapped out and with 4 weeks to go it would be impossible for the Eavis's to have clicked their fingers to summon up a band as big as U2 out of nowhere. I thought Gorillaz were amazing on Jools Holland a few weeks back so I'm sure they'll put a great show on, but if its not your thing there's plenty of alternatives like Groove Armada or The Flaming Lips.

with just over 3 weeks to go until the festival it just wasnt as simple as 'there were loads of better bands i thought should replace U2', getting anyone let alone the gorillaz is an acheivement for michael eavis. maybe not ideal for everyone but what can you expect when a band pulls out 3 weeks before the festival?

"Hi it's Michael Eavis. We've had U2 pull out, you might have heard about it. Bummer. Anyhow, would you like the prestige of headlining the 40th anniversary of the Glastonbury Festival and go down in history by joining this exclusive club who topped the Pyramid bill before: The Who, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Oasis, Coldplay, Kings of Leon, The Verve, Blur...oh, and it will do wonders for your record sales."
"Hmm, gee Mr Eavis, we're a bit busy to be honest and it will be really hard to change my/our plans for a day or two..."
I don't think so.

Obviously majorly disappointed in the U2 no show, but what can you do. Gorillaz headlining material ?, possibly not, but hopefully the spectacle of it all will create a great show. It's not as though they are the only band playing that evening.
For those who are getting irate, chill winston.

Echo the comments above. Glasto has never been about one band. There is no shortage of great stuff on Friday, as it stands I am struggling to work out what to go to...
Whatever I do it will be a fantastic festival and we should just go with the flow and enjoy it.. aided by plenty of cider of course

Oh absolutely, I am very excited about a hell of a lot on the bill across every day, but was personally so looking forward to U2 in that environment and just don't understand Gorillaz as the replacement.
As Damon Albarn himself put it the other night on Zane, when you get THAT phonecall you just don't say no. It could have been filled with a far more deserving artist. I also feel it slightly taints the prestige of what it means to achieve a Glasto headline slot. But it's just an opinion.
Hey-ho, the silver lining is I get to go see Groove Armada now.

Ah well, that'll be more space for me to dance then :P I'm well happy about Gorillaz, I reckon it'll be a great show. Think about it, if they get some of their collaborators on stage with them it'll be pretty epic, with the likes of De La Soul, Mick Jones and Paul Simonon, Bobby Womack, Cibo Matto, Snoop Dogg (very likely), Lou Reed, Gruff Rhys and Mos Def, amongst others, up there with Damon and Jamie.

U2 are fantastic and would of been exellent headliners. There are only a few other acts that have that 'super-group' label and therefore Mr Evis's had a limited choice from the off. IMHO only The Stones or Flloyd could 'replace' them.
My wife is U2 mad and was reallllly looking forward to seeing them again (8th time), we saw the 360 tour last year but a festival gig is a different animal and it would of been a cool gig in a field. You cannot, however bigger fan of Gorillaz you are class them as a 'replacement'. They are mearly filling in. No doubt it will be a A/V delight (which i will be watching and enjoying btw).
Personally the music at Glastonbury is secondry to the 'whole' experience so a change in headliner is not a massive blow

In some weird way I feel a bit relieved. I'm not a huge U2 fan but I'd have watched them because I would have felt like I should, and because I know it would have been exciting to watch. Now that they're not playing I'm freed up to explore all the other stuff - if that makes sense?
I still might take a look at Gorrilaz though to see if they do any clever A/V stuff.

Choices, Choices
While I am sure Gorillaz will do their best, the musical competition is gargantuan. If one has never seen the Flaming Lips, their stage show is brilliant and interactive.
I don't know how difficult it is to move between stages (I can't wait to get first hand experience), but if possible, I plan to visit two stages in the evenings. I enjoy catching a headliner's opening and another's closing acts.

Gorillaz to F Lips is gonna be Pyramid to Other stage or vice versa. Round about 15 mins if you know the way, depending on how many people are milling about. Of course you may have a good spot at the first stage but not at the second. I reckon the John Peel tent will be the fullest on the friday as Groove Armada who could easily have played one of the bigger stages will pack that out no probs
