Glasto Traditions
One for the old hands: What are your personal Glasto Traditions? Places to go, people/things to see, thinks to do or even foods to eat.
For me it's not Glasto without...
Brendan Burns at the Cabaret Tent.
Sitting at the top of the hill on Saturday night, a little bit intoxicated, just taking in the vastness of it.
A pint at the cider bus (half & half for me please).
OTWAY!
A visit to Strummerville.
Pakora from the Permaculture garden.
Mucking about with wandering performers in the theatre field.
Being utterly amazed/amused/delighted by something I'd never previously heard of.
Can it be Glasto NOW please?

Vodka slush puppy, Had my first watching Badly Drawn Boy in 2004.

My daughter came in with a slush puppy the other week from the ice cream van (never knew they sold them!) I ended up paying her 2 quid for it so I could stick some vodka in. Prob about 2 in the afternoon as well.

I haven't got any traditions, having only been to Glasto twice. I try to do different things so I can see some of what I missed the year before, if that could be seen as a tradition of sorts...

Early visit to the Stone Circle on Wednesday to get a good view of the site.
Meeting friends from all round the country on Thursday afternoon - very handily in the Jazz/World field (cant get used to calling it west holts) - and overdoing things.
Goan fish curry
And thats all before the music starts

Nice! A big improvement on my Cleaning Out Last Year's Spiders tradition I seem to have when putting up my tent!
Funnily enough, give the number of times I've been, I don't seem to have many traditions. Every year is different, it's one of the things I love about it. There's always something new to explore. Lou and I have started a recent tradition though, our Annual Thali Night to which we invite everyone we know there to join us for a Thali and a pint on Thursday evening. People drift along and join us for as long as they like and it's become one of our favourite parts of the weekend.
Nothing, and I mean nothing, beats that moment when you see the farm for the first time and know it's really about to happen. Even after all these years, the thrill is unbeatable. And for those of you coming for the first time, I envy you that moment!

Its not Glasto without getting my fake tattoo on Friday night (the start of the night).
Myself and my other half always do this stupid thing of wandering around after the headliners are done and end up getting two, normally awful, matching henna tattoo's. At the time its always great fun but in the morning we realise we look like right idiots but we do it every year - and we normally find we have bought loads of random things too.
We always have a large group of friends who have for the past 3 years managed to camp together. So with lots of divided opinions we all go our seperate ways in smaller groups but myself and himself always make sure we spend 1 night just us two!

Just out of curiosity do you have to go looking or does it usually come to you.
My first time to Glastonbury and moved house recently and don't know where to get any 'supplies' by me.

I like the new Stella cidre. Particularly at the price its currently being marketed.
Lous other half - I remember seeing the site for the first time last year and nearly wet myself with excitement. It is quite a spectacular sight first time, but now I know what to expect I do seem to be more excited this year

It never gets old... it just gets more exciting every year! A few more years and I may well spontaneously combust!

We took a friend in 2009 for his 1st time and he was on the phone to his wife when he saw the site from the top of hill of death and he really was speachless, he didnt say a word for about a min and when he did he just told his wife "It's fooking massive!'
Personally when the car starts to go over the temp surface in the 1st field a little tear usually appears.

Only my second time, so too early to really have a tradition - but I will defenately go up to the viewing field above the Park and Tipi area.
It simply took my breath away last year, just sitting there with my friends and plenty to drink and marvel at the sheer size of Glasto Happy days!!

Mine is taking someone new every year I go, I enjoy so much the look on their face First time they see the site, and again the following morning when they wake up and get out the tent to see 1000's of other tents have appeared overnight.......That never gets old. This year i am taking my cousin for his first Glasto and i am more excited about his reactions than about anything else.

like Lou's other half, despite having been going for so many years, i have few traditions, but like to think of them as lessons learned. Meeting mates in Safeway (now Morrisons) car park on Weds morning then driving to site in convoy. The first sight of the nice shiny fence glittering in the sunshine on the drive along the A361 still puts butterfly's in my stomach.
Only other traditions now are BBQ on Weds night, and getting wrecked and doing fook all on Thursday morning.

Haven't been to Glasto for 10 years or so, but last time I went we had spacecakes for breakfast. I then got a touch of sunstroke and was sat in my tent going under and kept seeing this dwarf slowly fill the tent with apples untill I couldn't take it anymore and had to get out. Dodgy were playing the Other Stage, and kind of brought me back round.
I'll try NOT to do that this year.

Hehe....genius! Dwarfs & apples will always fill you with dread!
Remember a mate just grabbing onto the grass & refusing to let go cos he was convinced he'd float away. Middle age woman walked past, tutted & said to her husband: 'it's terrible when you have to take drugs to enjoy yourself'. C'mon lady, we're ending ourselves & he thinks he's a balloon! Whats not to love?

Gary: That's an awesome tradition.
I'd been going for more than a few years when my now-husand came with. On cresting the hill by Worthy FM as the sun set he declared "SH!T it's Mos-Isely Spaceport!" :-)

Listening to Daddy Teacher on Worthy FM as we sit in our camper van, queuing to get in. Sending him loads and loads of texts, asking for "big shout outs to the Bradford massive" and asking him to play music we know he won't because it's "not his genre". Love Daddy Teacher, total legend.
Haven't really got any other traditions while there yet, it's only my 3rd year. Other than getting hammered, obviously.
Got some for the build up though. Like decanting lots of Pimms and vodka into plastic bottles. Writing lists. Not sleeping. Scaring the shit out of people by randomly leaping into the air and squealing "i'm going to Glastonbury!!!" every now and again.

Stilton Burgers - bloody lovely they are... Usually from the stall between West Holts and Green Fields..
Also, I now ensure I see Hobo Jones & The Junkyard Dogs at least once during the festival. Last year was special as they were joined on stage at Avalon Cafe by Glasto legend, Attila the Stockbroker
Oh, and I am another of the 40 brigade... last month

For me I guess it’s my Thursday tour of the site which I’ve done every year now since 2004 in order to photograph any changes to the set up and keep the photographic record I have of the camping fields on the GlastoEarth FAQs as up to date as possible. I always try to do it at the same time each year so that there is a true like for like comparison as to how full the fields are at a particular time.
I also try to visit each of the entertainment areas at least once over the course of the festival so that I can keep the photos fresh and up to date. It’s always a bit of a schlep over to John Peel and the Dance Village so I tend to check the Clashfinder for a time when there are likely to be a couple of things on over there which take my fancy to make the journey worthwhile.
Apart from that it’s a case of spending as much time as I possibly can in the Theatre and Circus fields, just taking in all the weird and wonderful walkabout stuff that goes on there.
It is also traditional & guaranteed that I shall wear a dress at some point over the weekend!

Keep an eye out for Bill & Tyrone's alter-egos, The Devil's Prefects. They'll be pitching up around the Theatre Field at various points in time.

We work by the John Peel Tent but spend most of our time in the theatre and circus fields and I have to agree the walk is a killer, especially on a hot day after a hard shift and a few tokes. Worth the effort every time though!
