campervan .v camping
Hi,
We have a very very basic campervan. So we need to pitch 2 tents next to it anyway (there are 4 of us). Would we be better off forgetting the campervan and just camping instead. (when I say basic - I mean 2 beds, a sink, a single hob, no fridge).
Am I right in saying that the campervan park has no advantages in terms of being closer to the action?
Also, is the campervan park outside security - in that case is it more prone to thefts?
Thanks - this is our first time - as you can guess!!

Presume you have paid for a campervan ticket already (if not, its too late) so some might say u may aswell use it.
The campervan fields are outside the main fence but I found there were always plenty of people about and security didn't seem to be a problem. You are actually further away from the actions - have a look at the map on the fine guide that comes with your ticket or have a look on the main site here http://www.glastonburyfestivals.co.u...ineguide10.pdf . You may find the campervan field quieter than some places on site, but it all depends on your neighbours and whether you're interested in sleeping !

The campervan fields are outside of the festival, so you'll have much further to walk each day than normal campers, and depending on where you're located you may have to endure the Hill of Death every time you return to base.
Being outside the festival means you'll have to pass through security every time you enter the festival which could possibly mean enduring queues and searches.
Being so far away from the action means you can't just nip back to your tent to change clothes or get supplies, so you'll have to carry everything you need for the day with you or put it one of the lock-ups.
Glastonbury is a 24hr a day party. if you camp outside, you'll miss it!
Do yourself a favour, forget the campervan and come join the fun.

we camped in the campervan feild last year ( 1st time in 12 yrs) never again. i think ive just got the look of someone dodgy as i always got searched daily going in. the comfort was ok but not worth it imo.i would rather do the long walk to a camping field as SAS says get amongst it

i agree, the comfort was nice but we did feel as though we missed some of the festival. Will be saving the campervan field for when we are older

have to disagree, I'm a definite campervan devotee. yes the commute can be a pain, though I intend on being much closer this year. The atmos in the campervan fields is great, all neighbours were very friendly and there was always stuff going on. If, like me, you need a good night's kip each night, it's the way forward. you can't party 24/7 in any case! The hill of death is a bitch but to be honest, but the commute back and forth could be quite good fun at times. I've never camped so I suppose I can't compare it. I love camping normally but it just doesn't appeal at Glasto. Get yourself there nice and early so you're not too far away and you'll be grand. For me, the prospect of a real bed, with my lovely duvet and teddy bear, a clean toilet for poos, cooking facilities and a shower make it all worthwhile! And presumably you can lock your van anyway so everything you leave is safe. I wouldn't have thought security would be an issue since it is a bit of a hassle to get into those fields so only other campervan people will be in there.

Each to their own! I have a good mate who has camped loads of times but had a campervan last year and would never do it again. They say it is too far from all the action and a long trudge back at night (or in their case, at about 4am) when completely knackered is too much.
Another mate hated the camping but loved the festival so hired a campervan a few years ago. They now have a campervan of their own and would never do Glasto any other way - they say it's a good atmosphere up there plus the comfort, warmth, security etc is well worth the walk every day.
Personally, staff camping is absolutely the best!

I camped for the first seven years, then I bought a 'van. Never looked back.
I never used to frequently nip back to my tent back in the day (too much to see and do), so the distance to the 'van fields isn't an issue for me. If you're worried about changing weather conditions, just take your wet weather gear in a bag and stick it in one of the lock-ups to save carrying it about all day - then it's close to hand if does take a turn for the worst.
Mostly I just enjoy pitching up and then that's it - no trekking across site twice with all my gear, cooked breakfast every day, cold beers all the way through, a shower if I need it and when I head back to the 'van about 3 or 4am there's a nice comfortable bed and no being woken two or three hours later because the temperature inside's hit 30 degrees...
Each to their own though.

Thought I'd update... We ended up in the campervan field, arrived Tuesday eve. And - it was fab. Walk to site not bad, very little queuing in and out, loos as good as could be expected. Loads of space.
Our campervan was extremely basic (2 beds, a hob and a sink) - others had the Ritz on wheels. Even so, with 2 tents, a tiny picnic area, friendly neighbours, we had a brilliant time. Oh, and the festival wasn't bad either!!!
